ECN-2 Development Process

Our unique ECN-2 process with Remjet removal:

  • Remjet softening - special pre-treatment solution to prepare the carbon layer
  • Mechanical removal - careful carbon layer removal with soft brushes and special tools
  • Chemical wash - complete carbon particle removal to ensure clean negatives
  • ECN-2 development - professional processing in Bellini chemistry (38°C ± 0.1°C) in the Jobo rotation system

Frequently Asked Questions

ECN-2 is the standard cinema film development process designed for motion picture films:

  • Kodak Vision3 series films (50D, 250D, 200T, 500T)
  • CineStill films (50D, 800T) - modified cinema films without Remjet layer
  • Other professional cinema films with ECN-2 marking

ECN-2 films produce negative images with a special cinematographic color palette and a wide dynamic range.

Remjet (Removable Jet Black) is a black carbon layer on the back of cinema films:

  • Protects film from light reflection in camera mechanisms
  • Prevents halo effects in cinema projection
  • Must be removed before development
  • If not removed - damages chemistry and process

BFS is the only place in the Baltics offering complete Remjet removal using a specialized process.

Vision3 films are professional cinema films with unique properties:

  • Wider color gamut and dynamic range
  • Special color palette tonality (cinematographic look)
  • Greater sensitivity to exposure precision
  • Optimized for cinema projection and digital processing
  • Remjet carbon layer on the back

The result is an authentic 'film look' with rich colors and smooth tonal transitions.

Yes! CineStill films are modified Vision3 films:

  • CineStill 50D - from Vision3 50D (without Remjet)
  • CineStill 800T - from Vision3 500T + special processing
  • No Remjet removal required
  • Can be developed in both C41 and ECN-2 processes
  • The ECN-2 process produces more authentic cinema colors

We recommend the ECN-2 process for better cinematographic results.

We develop ECN-2 films twice per week, usually on Mondays and Thursdays. This is related to the following:

  • The chemistry costs for ECN-2 are higher
  • The Remjet removal process is complex
  • A sufficient amount of films needs to be amassed

The turnaround time is 2-4 business days. For larger projects or urgent cases, please contact us individually.

We develop only 135 (35mm) ECN-2 films:

  • Kodak Vision3, all 35mm versions
  • CineStill 50D and 800T
  • Other 35mm ECN-2 films on request

We do not develop: 120 cinema films (not available), 16mm and Super 8 films (no appropriate equipment), 65mm or other professional formats.

All 35mm ECN-2 development services include complete Remjet removal.

Yes, Push/Pull processing is available for ECN-2 films with the following limitations:

  • Push: up to +2 EV (increases contrast and richness)
  • Pull: up to -2 EV (reduces contrast and softens tones)
  • The color shift is minimal compared to E6
  • Maintains a cinematographic look

Vision3 films are quite tolerant to exposure errors; Push/Pull helps in creative projects.

ECN-2 development costs more than C41 for the following reasons:

  • ECN-2 chemistry is 4-5 times more expensive
  • The Remjet removal process requires additional time and materials
  • A specialized process with precise temperature control (38°C)
  • Unique service in the Baltics

On the other hand, the result is an authentic 'film look' with cinematographic quality that cannot be achieved otherwise.

No, the base price €5.90 is only for development with Remjet removal. We offer packages:

  • Standard package: €9.90 - development + Remjet removal + scanning + index print
  • High quality package: €10.90 - high quality scanning
  • Cinematographic package: €24.90 - maximum quality scanning

All the packages include complete Remjet removal. For detailed information about cinema film scanning see our scanning section.

Developed ECN-2 films are:

  • Carefully cleaned of all carbon particles
  • Dried in special dust-free environment
  • Can be placed in archival quality sleeves

The films can be collected at our store or delivered. Store films in a cool, dry place for optimal preservation. Remjet removal means that the films are ready for immediate scanning without carbon problems.
