Boom arms are studio stands with a crossbar or arm that lets you position a light above your subject. This category includes booms, overhead light stands and kits from Fotocom, Fomei, Manfrotto, Quadralite and StudioKing, including stands on wheels and mini telescopic arms.
A boom is ideal for overhead lighting in portraits and product photography when the stand must stay out of frame. When choosing, check the maximum extended height (for example 395, 492 or 510 cm), the arm length and the counterweight – many kits include a sandbag or weight that balances the light and keeps the stand from tipping over.
