Reflected light rays become polarized. Polarizing filters are used to select which light rays reach the camera lens. They can eliminate unwanted reflections from non-metallic surfaces such as water or glass, and saturate colours, providing better contrast. The effect can be seen through the viewfinder and changed by rotating the filter. The filter factor changes depending on how the filter is rotated and its orientation relative to the sun.

 

If you go for a walk on a beautiful day - in the mountains or at the beach - and want to capture wonderful cloudy skies or make water look more saturated, a polarizer is the right solution. This filter is the best way to make clouds stand out, increase or decrease the saturation of the ocean, or increase or decrease glare from water. This filter can also be used when shooting through glass or windows, as it again either increases or decreases reflections.
