Samyang AF 85mm f/1.4 FE II lens for Sony E

A small telephoto lens, ideal for portraits, animals and travel

The 85 mm focal length is ideal for subjects you want to bring closer or make stand out without getting too close to them. The 28.9° angle of view is also especially suited to portraits or small groups, as people look naturally proportioned at this focal length. That is why lenses with focal lengths from 80 to 105 millimetres are also called portrait lenses. The AF 85mm F1.4 also works well as a general-purpose lens when travelling. This lens is made for stitching panoramas at very high resolution, and this focal length is a good introduction to night sky photography, for example capturing parts of the Milky Way. At the zoo the lens performs just as well as on a photo safari, and you will be rewarded with enviable shots.

To give the lens the best possible optical performance, the light path is specially optimized based on the relationship between the lens glass and the position of the sensor in Sony cameras. Despite its sturdy metal body, the high-quality lens has a compact design. Screw-in filters can be attached to the 77 mm thread, expanding your creative options. The fast and precise autofocus is a great help even with moving subjects.

High-quality optics for sharp images

The inside of this lens is made up of 11 glass elements arranged in 8 groups. This gives a short minimum focus distance of only 90 cm. Four high-refractive-index (HR) elements and one extra-low-dispersion (ED) element reduce chromatic aberrations and distortion, delivering high imaging performance. This shows in sharp pictures with clear contrast and natural colours. The optical design is completed by Samyang's proprietary Ultra Multi Coating (UMC), which prevents flare and ghosting.

Advantages of a full-frame lens on an APS-C sensor camera

Many lens flaws, such as distortion, soft edges or vignetting, occur in the outer areas of the image. If you use a lens designed for full frame on a camera with an APS-C sensor, these areas are not used. This way you get maximum quality. As a result, no extra processing time is needed to correct lens flaws. The angle of view with APS-C is 19.1° (crop factor 1.6).

Compact size

Despite its strong performance, the lens, housed in a sturdy aluminium body, is small and compact: weighing only 568 g, with a length of less than 10 cm and a diameter of 8.8 cm, it fits easily into almost any camera bag and causes no back pain or sweating even on longer trips or excursions.
