The lens system uses both an aspherical lens and an ED lens among its fourteen elements in ten groups to achieve outstanding compactness, using the advantages of the Micro Four Thirds standard for a dramatic reduction in size while reducing distortion and chromatic aberration. The Panasonic Mega O.I.S. (optical image stabiliser) suppresses the blur usually caused by hand shake, making it easy to take sharp macro photos and detailed images in poorly lit places without a tripod.

It includes an internal focusing direct-drive linear motor with a three-group floating structure for focusing, which provides outstanding resolution and contrast without changing the overall length from full life-size magnification to infinity. The stepping motor makes focusing smooth and quiet during both photo and video recording. The closest focusing distance can be switched instantly to 15 cm or 50 cm (0.5 ft to 1.64 ft) with a switch on the lens barrel, depending on the shooting situation. The LEICA DG MACRO-ELMARIT 45mm / F2.8 ASPH. / MEGA O.I.S. lens is also well suited to portraits, mid-range snapshots or scenes, in addition to the original full-size macro images.

When mounted on a LUMIX G Micro System camera, the lens enables the advanced contrast AF system, which includes a face recognition function, for easier and more enjoyable shooting. Seven blades give the aperture a rounded shape, which creates an attractive smooth effect in out-of-focus areas when shooting at larger aperture settings. The LEICA DG MACRO-ELMARIT 45mm / F2.8 ASPH. / MEGA O.I.S. lens also has a highly reliable metal mount and uses multi-coated lens elements that reduce ghosting and flare, further improving optical performance.
